Summer Season Activities

Summer is perfect for walking or cycling trips. We highly recommend a visit to the highest mountain of the Czech Republic, Sněžka, 1602 metres high.. If you don´t feel up to walking the whole distance, you can make use of the chair lift to Sněžka from Pec pod Sněžkou. Across the whole of the Giant Mountains you will find beautiful landscapes that attract thousands of visitors to this area every year. Examples of some of the most beautiful places to visit are Pramen Labe, Výrovka and Luční bouda, or Vrbatova and Labská bouda. The nearest attraction for many tourists is the Žalý mountain with the observation tower and newly rebuilt cottage, serving food and refreshments. You can visit Žalý by foot, by bike, or by taking the chair lift from Herlíkovice (the lift runs during the summer and you can take your bicycle up with you).A little further away, just above the spa town of Jánské Lázně is Černá hora (Black Mountain)which also has a lift running through the summer months.

There are many marked cycle paths and small forest tracks for use by cyclists. Skilled bikers are able to ascend many of the mountains using these paths and tracks, but for children it´s better to stick to the „ Podkrkonoší“ routes. These routes climb up to the top of Černá hora, via Tetřeví bouda, go to Strážné, and in fact cover practically the whole of the Giant Mountains. You can travel farther afield, or shorten your journey, by making use of the Giant Mountains cyclobuses which run regularly right across the mountain area; you can travel on them as far as Trutnov in one direction or Harrachov in the other.

There are landmarks to see within the town of Vrchlabí too:
You can visit the castle, where the town council is located or the St. Augustin monastery with the exposition „Stone and life“. Also in the town is the Giant Mountains museum, located in 4 traditional houses in the town centre.

Other places to visit include St. Lawrence church, the ice-hockey stadium, and the salt cave or Solná jeskyně a solárium Vrchlabí.

If you are visiting us during the summer holidays (July, August) we would recommend you the traditional craft fair which takes place in July, or the Beer Festival in August. A program of cultural events can be found here For an aerial view of the beautiful Giant Mountains, you can take a sight-seeing flight in a light aircraft from the airport close to Lánov, just outside Vrchlabí: their site. For golfers, there is a golf course in Prosečné: http://www.gccprosecne.cz/.

If you would like to go horse riding, you shouldn´t miss the stables at Kněžice: their site. For adrenaline sports, there is a centre run by Yellow Point in Špindlerův Mlýn. A curiosity is the carillon in Dolní Dvůr: http://www.dolnidvur.cz/ that plays various melodies in every season.Worth seeing also is the Stachelberg fortress and the mining path Berghaus in Černý Důl: here
